Capitol Leadership is an event that takes place in Washington D.C. and allows for students to view the nation's Capitol, learn advocacy skills, and network with other students.
This year our State Executive Council were able to sit down and talk with our Senators, John Boozeman, and Tom Cotton. They also got to meet and talk with our Representatives, French Hill, Bruce Westerman, and Rick Crawford. Our officers were able to discuss Career and Technical Education of both Arkansas and the Nation with these leaders.
Our State Executive Council was also able to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and lay a wreath out in honor.
As a group with all of Arkansas attendees and the attendees from other states, there were over 400 students that were present at this years Capitol Leadership. After learning about advocacy, they then began advocating the the change in youth and tobacco laws. They were urging for change concerning taxing tobacco, making it harder for students to obtain tobacco, and helping promote quitting the use of tobacco products. The students focused mainly on e-cigarettes and vapor products, but their advocacy efforts were not limited to these products.
